Swimming Pool Glossary: Chlorine

One of the most popular swimming pool sanitizers is chlorine. It works to disinfect pool water and stop algae growth in pools and spas.

Chlorine works by attacking the organisms that grow in pool water. It halts the growth of these organisms, thus cleaning the water. Chlorine can also attack waste in the water that originates from swimmers. Because chlorine can oxidize ammonia and nitrogen compounds, it can clean this type of waste.

Chlorine is a dangerous chemical and can mildly irritate skin and eyes while swimming. However, the use of chlorine in pool or spa water generally will not affect users.
