Swimming Pool Glossary: Filtration Rate

The filtration rate measures how much water actually passes through your filter and how quickly it is able to do so.

Filtration rate is generally measured in gallons per minute (GPM) through a filter medium of one square foot. Most residential pools should have a filtration rate of 2 GPM for each square foot of DE filter area. If you have a cartridge filter in your private pool it should filter at about 1 GPM. Commercial pools generally have slower filtration rates. Typically, a DE filter should process about 1 GPM per square foot in a commercial pool and a cartridge filter should be able to process about .375 GPM per square foot.
