Swimming Pool Glossary: Horsepower

You have probably already heard of the term horsepower, especially when talking about your car or lawnmower. Horsepower is a measurement we use to describe how much work is done over a period of time. A single horsepower consists of 33 000 foot-pounds of work done in one minute. For example, if you lifted 33 000 pounds, one foot high, in one minute flat, you would be working at one horsepower. The term was coined by James Watt who noted that a horse could complete 33 000 foot-pounds of work each minute.
