~ Cottage Kitchen Remodel on a Budget

{To see a photo slide presentation of this remodel from start to finish, please click here.}

Thank you for viewing our cottage kitchen remodel project. My goal was to transform our boring basic kitchen from the 90's into a warm and charming cottage / farmhouse style kitchen. Because my husband and I are on a tight budget, we knew we'd have to do nearly all of the work ourselves and over a period of time. With the exception of installing the brick paver backsplash, we remodeled the rest of the kitchen ourselves. This is our first home and we had never tackled anything like this before - so needless to say, I held my breath the whole time! It was a trial and error process, but we are both pleased with how the kitchen has turned out so far.

One major project for the kitchen included adding trimwork and moulding to our basic honey oak cabinets and then painting them red followed by a distressing technique for an antique look. Again, not ever having done trimwork before, this process was all trial and error but we finally got it right! If we can do this, I know anyone can.

Another major project was covering our ugly plaster popcorn ceiling with tongue and groove pine planks. {No need to scrape the ceiling first...Just cover it!} We made our own box beams as well. The plank ceiling really goes a long way in adding cottage charm to our kitchen.

We also added french doors and windows where there was once only a wall and single door and that really brightened up the space considerably. It was an uneasy feeling seeing the whole wall on the east side of kitchen completely missing during installation. I believe that is called "the point of no return!"
Besides adding a new countertop, sink, faucet, appliances, and lighting, we recently put down our hardwood. We lived with subflooring for two years until we were ready to lay the wood {budget living at it's finest!}, so I was thrilled to finally have real flooring at last. I literally kissed the hardwood floors after we installed them!

We are *almost* finished with the kitchen and dining area. By the end of this year, we would like to finish painting the doors and baseboards, install white beadboard around the perimeter of the room, add red corbels below the upper cabinets, and install an old fashioned faux fireplace with wooden electric logs in the dining area. The biggest challenge that we had to overcome has been living with a work in progress for about three years now, but our greatest satisfaction is knowing that though it has taken a while, we've remodeled this kitchen ourselves, saving money and learning along the way.

In the meantime, I've decorated the kitchen using thrifty finds from yard sales and Goodwill. Cottage decorating is a passion of mine and I so enjoy "goodwill hunting" to find the perfect treasures for my home.

Thanks again for taking the time to read about our cottage kitchen makeover on a budget. Remember, what you lack in money, you can make up for in creativity, patience, and good old-fashioned elbow grease!
