Remodeling our Kitchen

Bought 1926 barrel-front Marina style home in San Francisco. Hadn't been touched by owners nearly at all over the years, except to add layers of awful linoleum. Closed-off floorplan (living room was separate from kitchen, very inconvenient); kitchen was L-shape, with dark, dilapidated lightwell/stair into garage; broken/painted-shut windows.

We relocated the stair into garage, pushing out kitchen into former lightwell so that it became rectangular, then opened large passageway in wall into living room for much better flow. Added vaulted ceiling (nice attic/crawl space enabled) and sklylights with plenty of can/spot lighting; large island with honed dark granite counters and plenty of cabinetry with large storage drawers. Hightlights: soffet over cabinets to create a much more finished look and roof-mounted vent fan over range in island that allowed us to avoid installing range hood -- kept room open, airy, bright. We loved it, great place to spend time as a family, everyone at parties congregated in kitchen; added nice central flow to house in general.
