3 Types of Gutters to Consider for Your Home

Gutters have an important function: They prevent water from pooling around your house and possibly causing leaks or foundation damage. You have several options when choosing the gutters for your home. Some gutter systems are economically priced, blend in with your exterior trim, and simply do their job of moving water; others can be more costly and are meant to be noticed.

Three Popular Gutter Materials: Pros and Cons

  1. Aluminum gutters are lightweight, low maintenance, and available in many colors. You can purchase them in sections or have a contractor install seamless gutters to reduce the chance of leaks. Aluminum gutters are fairly inexpensive; 5 inch aluminum gutters can be installed for about $8 a foot.
  2. Copper gutters are popular on old and luxury homes for their distinctive appearance and their beautiful patina as they age. Copper gutters can be expensive; expect to pay about $13 a foot for 5 inch gutters.
  3. Vinyl gutters are economical, easy to install, and virtually maintenance free. You should be able to have 5 inch gutters installed on your home for about $6.50 a foot.

All prices are approximate and may vary depending on where you live. If you have a large roof, you may need to consider 6-or 7-inch gutters for your home.

There are a few different gutter shape options to consider as well. Many modern homes have K-style gutters which feature an angular profile. A lot of older or country-themed homes use half-round gutters. The K-style and half-round gutters also have many variations depending on the manufacturer.
